What a game Monday night in West Branch. The Pella Christian Eagles came to town, and they came to fight. However, this was West Branch's night. The Bears beat the Eagles 42-27.
The scoring started only a minute and 20 seconds into the game when Luke Lenoch broke loose for a 55 yard touchdown run to the put the Bears up 7-0 early. Later in the first quarter, to cap off a nice West Branch drive, quarterback Cooper Koenig snuck his way into the endzone to put the Bears up 13-0 (after a blocked PAT).
Pella Christian responded with a short touchdown run of their own on their next drive to close the gap to 13-7. That's where the game stood after one quarter. And two quarters as well.
On the first play of the second half, the Eagles come out ready to take this game. Quarterback David Kacmarynski runs 63 yards down to the 3 yard to set up a touchdown run on the next play. The PAT was good to give the Eagles the lead 14-13.
Later in the 3rd, West Branch put together another nice drive that was capped off by a Devin Kindon three yard touchdown run and a Cooper Kabela two-point conversion that gave the Bears the lead once again. Back and forth we go. On the Eagles' next drive, they quickly tied it at 21 with 2:33 left in the third quarter.
Hunter Wargo decided to break the tie on the very next play as the senior took the Pella Christian kickoff 90 yards into the endzone to put the Bears up 28-21. Less than a minute later, Devin Kindon picked off a Kacmarynski pass and went 30 yards for a pick-six. At the end of a wild third quarter, the Bears lead the Eagles 35-21.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Eagles took advantage of several fourth down conversions and West Branch penalties that allowed themselves to drive down the field and punch it in for a touchdown. After a missed PAT, the Bears lead is down to eight with 5:50 left.
A little over a minute later, Devin Kindon takes over the Bears' drive with some big runs and hard hits, the final one being a 23 yard touchdown to give the Bears a comfortable 42-27 lead with 4:28 left.
Just as the Eagles were starting to put together a nice drive to close the gap, Luke Lenoch intercepts a Kacmarynski pass to put the final nail in the coffin.
West Branch wins 42-27 and moves on to the quarterfinals of the playoffs where they will travel to Iowa City to take on the Regina Regals this Friday night.
