Once again this week, the Bears had a Friday night game postponed due to rain and thunderstorms in the eastern Iowa area. Instead, North Cedar came to town Saturday morning for the Bears' first District 5 match-up of the season.
It was a slow-starting game as both teams were scoreless after the first quarter. However, things started to pick up in the second quarter as the Bears were first to get on the board thanks to a nine yard Luke Lenoch touchdown run, who was helped out by his teammates pushing the pile into the endzone. North Cedar quickly answerd with a touchdown of their own, but couldn't tie the game due to a Colton Dietz field goal block.
Still in the second quarter, the Bears executed a nice drive down to the one yard line, where Lenoch snuck his way into the endzone to put the Bears up 14-6. The successful PAT was Devin Kindon's 101st of his career, which is a new school record.
It was a defensive battle in the third quarter but the Bears managed to extend their lead thanks to a 24 yard field goal from Devin Kindon.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears' offense started to wake up as Luke Lenoch found a large whole and used his speed to go 60+ yards down to inside the five yard line. A couple plays later, Cooper Koenig completes a touchdown pass to a wide open Cooper Kabela to put the Bears up 24-6.
Later in the fourth, the Bears' defense forced a North Cedar punt and senior Aaron Barnes took the punt back 57 yards for a West Branch touchdown. That return was the Bears' first punt return for a touchdown since 2010 (Bo Bower).
The final scoring play of the game came late where the Knights backed the Bears up deep in their own endzone and ended up blocking a punt of of the back of the endzone, resulting in a safety.
The Bears went on to win with a final score of 31-8.
